MOST BACKWARD CASTES (MBC)
5% Reservation for MBC
In Rajasthan, the Most Backward Classes (MBC) reservation primarily benefits the Gurjar, Gadiya Lohar, Banjara, and Raika/Rebari communities. Here are the key details regarding MBC reservation in Rajasthan:
1. Reservation Percentage
MBCs in Rajasthan get 5% reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.
This reservation is separate from the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota, which is 21%.
2. Background
The demand for a separate reservation for Gurjars and other communities led to protests over the years.
The Rajasthan government introduced the Rajasthan Backward Classes Amendment Bill, 2019, which increased the MBC reservation to 5%.
3. Applicability
It applies to state government jobs and admissions in state-run educational institutions.
It does not apply to central government jobs like UPSC, SSC, or central educational institutions like AIIMS and IITs.
4. Legal Status
The Rajasthan High Court had previously put the reservation on hold due to concerns over exceeding the 50% reservation limit set by the Supreme Court.
However, the Rajasthan government has justified the MBC quota under the exceptional circumstances clause in the Constitution.
5. Documents Required for MBC Reservation
To avail of MBC reservation benefits, candidates must have:
MBC Certificate (issued by Tehsildar/SDM)
